Once you’ve installed epoxy flooring in your commercial or domestic premises, you’ll want to keep it looking as good as day one. Fortunately, one of this type of flooring’s many benefits is its low maintenance – music to every business operator or homeowner’s ears!
One of the reasons most people opt for epoxy flooring is its durability – which essentially constitutes a level of self-maintenance! While it does a fantastic job of looking after itself in this regard, enduring minimal damage in terms of chips, scrapes and wear and tear compared to other flooring types, it can be subject to cuts and gouges in some industrial settings. If this occurs, you can contact your epoxy flooring installer to discuss your options, which, depending on the level and nature of the damage, may range from spot-repairing an area, to re-coating. Generally, re-coating should only be necessary if the floor is peeling, ‘bubbling’ or coming away from the concrete, or if it’s been subjected to excessive wear and tear. If the flooring has been installed by reputable professionals, however, you shouldn’t experience these issues.
The flooring will, of course, be subject to the usual dust, dirt and everyday grit of any communal area. To keep it looking spick and span on a daily basis, epoxy flooring will generally only require sweeping with a soft-bristled broom, and mopping with nothing more than warm water. In fact, you should avoid harsh chemicals, bleaches and acidic cleaners when cleaning the floor, as they are not only unnecessary, but can also cause potential damage, dulling the surface. In instances where water and elbow grease cannot remove a mark, a heavily diluted dishwashing liquid or ammonia-based solution can be used, but be sure to check the ratios of cleaning agent-to-water before you try this method.
Because it tends to be poured in a single continuous ‘sheet’, epoxy flooring is usually devoid of the gaps and join lines that can otherwise collect dirt and water, not to mention bacteria, fungus and mold. This in itself makes it a far easier surface to clean – and keep clean. If the floor is subject to heavier traffic and dirt (sometimes exacerbated by being trampled by grubby feet and vehicle tyres during wet weather), it may require scrubbing in areas, but again, warm water and a sponge or soft-bristled brush should be all that’s needed.
If the flooring is in an industrial space where it’s liable to have corrosive liquids or materials spilt on it, it’s important to clean these up as soon as possible. Like other flooring, epoxy can be damaged by these substances if they are not dealt with quickly: unlike some other flooring types, swift cleaning of spills will not result in staining.
Your epoxy flooring is built to last and to stay looking good. With basic care and maintenance, you’ll be easily able to help it do so.
